Psalm 78 is the great historical psalm of the Book of Psalms — a maskil of Asaph, the second-longest in the book — the story of the people told from Egypt to David. Part 8 is the darkest chapter of the psalm: betrayal inside the promised land itself, the high places and the idols, the great anger — and then the hardest blow of all: the dwelling of Shiloh abandoned, the ark of the covenant carried into captivity, the priests fallen by the sword. The grandfather's voice darkens here to the very edge of night — so that the next generation will know this too, and not repeat the mistake.
The central verse, chosen as the name of the song, is:
"When God heard, He was full of wrath, and He utterly rejected Israel"
These are the hardest words in the psalm. After all the wonders, after the manna and the shepherd's road — the people betrayed again, inside the promised land itself. And the verse softens nothing. Yet the text does not hide the dark hours from us, because a truth left untold — returns. And this rejection, as the end of the psalm teaches, is not the end of the story.
