About This Psalm

Asaph opened the psalm with the feast's sound. In its second part all falls quiet, and one voice rises from the gladness: the voice of God Himself, in the first person — recalling Sinai, warning against a foreign god, promising plenty to whoever opens his mouth. And out of that love an ache rises: the people did not listen.

The song follows the psalm: the chorus carries the first two commandments and the great promise — open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

The verse that opens the singing, and gives the song its name:

"I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it"

Only an invitation, not a demand: open your mouth wide and ask, and He fills it with good.
