Like a Tree Planted by Streams of Water

Long before David became king, he was already recognized as a soul of music, courage, wisdom, and divine presence:

“I have seen a son of Jesse from Bethlehem, gifted in music, brave and wise, noble in appearance — and the Lord is with him.”

1 Samuel 16:18

Psalm 1 opens the Book of Psalms with a clear and powerful choice: the path of blessing, rooted in Torah and closeness to God, or the path of emptiness, instability, and distance from Him.

This chapter describes the blessed person as someone who does not follow corrupt advice, does not stand with sinners, and does not sit among those who mock holiness. Instead, his desire is in the Torah of the Lord, and he thinks about it day and night.

The central image of the chapter is deeply beautiful:

a person rooted in God’s Torah is like a tree planted by streams of water.

Such a tree has nourishment, stability, fruit, and life. Even when the world changes around it, its roots remain connected to the source.

Psalm 1 reminds us that spiritual life is not only about emotion, but about direction. Where a person walks, where he stands, where he sits, what he listens to, and what he fills his mind with — all of these shape the soul.
