Psalm 85 opens with a good memory rather than a cry: the land is accepted, the captivity returned, the guilt carried away and the sin covered. And out of that memory the great request rises — if you have forgiven once, turn to us now as well.
The verse that gives the song its name and its chorus:
"Show us your mercy, O LORD, and grant us your salvation"
Show us — let us see it with our own eyes; your mercy — the kindness given freely, without our earning it. That is: not only forgive us, but let us watch the forgiveness happen.
