Psalm 78 is the great historical psalm of the Book of Psalms — a maskil of Asaph, the second-longest in the book. Part 6 counted the plagues, wave after wave; Part 7 arrives at the moment the night ends. It opens in the heart of darkness — the great anger, the plague, the death of the firstborn — and then, in a single verse, everything turns. God does not remain a judge; He becomes a shepherd. The people who walk out from among the ruins do not walk alone: Someone walks before them and leads them in safety. This is the part where fear ends and the road begins.
The central verse, chosen as the name of the song, is:
"He made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock"
This is the heart of the whole part. God brings His people out not as an army — but as sheep. And the sheep does not know the way, does not know where the water is, does not know when to stop. That is exactly the point: the people know nothing about the desert ahead — and they do not need to know. The Shepherd knows. A consolation for everyone who cannot see the way ahead: you do not need to know where to go — only to walk behind the One who knows.
