Verse 1
"For the conductor. Of the sons of Korah. A maskil."
"For the conductor" means it was given to the one who led the singing.
"The sons of Korah" were a family connected with sacred song in the Temple.
"Maskil" means a psalm of wisdom and understanding.
Verse 19
"Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not turned away from Your path."
"Our heart has not turned back" means the inner faith of the people has not retreated.
"Our steps" means their way of life, and "Your path" means the way of God.
The verse says that even in pain, Israel has not abandoned the covenant.
Verse 20
"Though You crushed us in a place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death."
"Crushed us" describes deep suffering and brokenness.
"A place of jackals" means desolation and loneliness.
"The shadow of death" means darkness, danger, and fear.
Verse 21
"If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a foreign god."
"Forgotten the name of our God" means abandoning faith and identity.
"Spread out our hands" means turning in prayer or worship.
"A foreign god" means false worship and spiritual betrayal.
Verse 22
"Would God not search this out? For He knows the hidden things of the heart."
"Search this out" means examine the truth.
"The hidden things of the heart" are the secret thoughts, fears, loyalties, and intentions that only God knows.
Verse 23
"For Your sake we are killed all day; we are considered like sheep for slaughter."
"For Your sake" means because of loyalty to God.
"All day" means constantly.
"Like sheep for slaughter" means helpless, exposed, and suffering.
The pain is not separate from faith, but carried because of faith.
Verse 24
"Awake, why do You sleep, O Lord? Wake up; do not reject forever."
"Awake" and "Wake up" are human words of prayer, asking God to rise and act.
"Do not reject forever" means: do not leave us abandoned without end.
This is the heart of the song.
Verse 25
"Why do You hide Your face? Why do You forget our affliction and our oppression?"
"Hide Your face" means that God's kindness and closeness feel concealed.
"Affliction" means pain and humiliation.
"Oppression" means pressure and suffering.
The verse asks why the suffering continues while the people still call to God.
Verse 26
"For our soul has bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth."
"Our soul has bowed down to the dust" means the inner life feels lowered and broken.
"Our belly clings to the earth" describes total collapse.
The prayer comes from the lowest place.
Verse 27
"Arise as help for us, and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness."
"Arise" means: act now.
"Help for us" means rescue, support, and salvation.
"For the sake of Your kindness" means that the hope rests on God's mercy and covenant love.
This part teaches that prayer does not end when the heart is broken. Even from dust and concealment, Israel still calls to God: arise, help us, and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness.
