Verse 1
"A Song and Psalm for the sons of Korah."
The sons of Korah were a dedicated family of Temple singers and musicians who composed many of the most soulful and majestic prayers in the Book of Psalms, expressing deep longing and absolute trust in God.
Verse 2
"Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness."
The LORD's greatness is sovereign and unmatched, and He is worthy of the highest praise. This glory is revealed in Jerusalem, the city of our God, upon the holy mountain of Zion where His presence dwells.
Verse 3
"Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King."
Mount Zion stands in breathtaking majesty, a physical and spiritual beacon that brings joy and hope to the entire world. It represents the eternal capital of the ultimate King of kings.
Verse 4
"God in her palaces is known for a refuge."
Within the palaces and fortresses of Jerusalem, God's presence is felt not as an intimidating force, but as an approachable shield and a safe refuge for all who seek His shelter.
Verse 5
"For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together."
The powerful rulers of the nations assembled in alliance, marching together in a show of force, planning to conquer the holy city and display their temporal dominion.
Verse 6
"They saw it, and so they marveled; they were troubled, and hasted away."
As soon as the invading kings looked upon the spiritual strength of the holy city and felt the divine presence guarding it, they were struck with sudden panic and fled in utter confusion.
Verse 7
"Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail."
A sudden, overwhelming terror seized the hearts of the mighty warriors, rendering them completely powerless, like the sharp and inescapable labor pains of a woman giving birth.
Verse 8
"Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind."
Just as a mighty east wind easily shatters the massive, powerful trade ships of Tarshish on the high seas, so does God break the pride and military alliances of those who rise against Him.
Verse 9
"As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah."
What we learned from ancient testimonies of our fathers, we have now witnessed with our own eyes in the eternal city of the LORD of hosts. We stand in awe of the promise that God will establish Jerusalem forever. Selah.
