Verse 1
"For the conductor — a servant of the LORD, of David, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul."
"For the conductor" — the one who leads the singing.
"A servant of the LORD" — David sees himself as God's servant.
"On the day the LORD delivered him" — the time God saved him.
"From the hand of Saul" — also from King Saul, who pursued him.
Verse 13
"From the brightness before Him, His clouds passed over — hailstones and coals of fire."
"Brightness" — a powerful light. "His clouds" — surrounding Him.
"Hailstones" — ice from the sky. "Coals of fire" — burning pieces.
Light, clouds, hail, and fire — the power of God's appearance.
Verse 14
"The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High gave forth His voice — hailstones and coals of fire."
"Most High" — a name for the LORD, above all things.
The voice of the LORD — mighty thunder from the heavens.
Verse 15
"He sent out His arrows and scattered them, with great lightning He routed them."
"His arrows" — blows on enemies. "Scattered them" — drove them away.
"Routed them" — confused and terrified them.
Verse 16
"Then the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were laid bare, at Your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils."
"Foundations of the world" — the very foundations of the earth.
"At Your rebuke" — from Your powerful word.
"Breath of Your nostrils" — a metaphor for God's anger at wickedness.
Verse 17
"He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters."
"From on high" — from the heavens.
"Many waters" — great troubles, like a person nearly drowning.
The LORD sent help from above and pulled David out.
Verse 18
"He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me."
"Strong enemy" — a powerful foe. "Too mighty for me" — stronger than David alone.
His enemies were stronger — but the LORD saved him.
Verse 19
"They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support."
"Day of my calamity" — the day of disaster and trouble.
"My support" — a pillar of strength to lean on.
Verse 20
"He brought me out into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me."
"Broad place" — wide and open, the opposite of pressure and confinement.
"He delighted in me" — He loved me and chose me.
Verse 21
"The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He repaid me."
"Cleanness of my hands" — doing what is right and pure.
The LORD saw David's straight path and returned good to him.
Verse 22
"For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and I have not wickedly departed from my God."
"I have kept" — I did not abandon His path.
"I have not done wickedly" — I did not choose an evil path.
David remained faithful to the LORD and never left His ways.
Verse 23
"For all His ordinances were before me, and His statutes I did not put away from me."
"Before me" — in front of my eyes, always remembered.
"I did not put away from me" — I did not remove them from my life.
The Torah of the LORD is always before David's eyes, and he will not remove it.
