Psalm 65 — Part 2 Explained — He Stills the Roaring of the Seas

Verse 8

"Who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the tumult of the peoples."

God quiets the roar of the surging seas and the crash of their waves, and in the same way He quiets the noise and turmoil of the nations. The power that rules the sea also rules history and humankind.

Verse 9

"They who dwell in the uttermost parts are in awe of Your signs; You make the going out of morning and evening sing for joy."

Even the people at the farthest ends of the earth stand in awe of God's signs. The place of sunrise and the place of sunset, east and west, You fill with song and rejoicing.

Verse 10

"You visit the earth and water it; You greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, for so You have prepared it."

You remember the earth and water it, enriching it abundantly. The river of God is full of water; You prepare the grain and make the harvest ready.

Verse 11

"You water its furrows abundantly; You settle its ridges; You soften it with showers; You bless its growth."

You drench the furrows of the field and level its ridges; with gentle rain You soften the soil, and You bless everything that grows from it.

Verse 12

"You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance."

You crown the whole year with Your goodness, like a crown upon its head; and wherever You pass, abundance and richness overflow.

Verse 13

"The pastures of the wilderness drip, and the hills gird themselves with joy."

Even the pastures of the wilderness — barren, desolate places — drip with blessing; and the hills wrap themselves in gladness as with a garment.

Verse 14

"The meadows are clothed with flocks, the valleys are covered with grain; they shout for joy, they also sing."

The meadows are clothed with flocks of sheep, and the valleys are wrapped in grain; all of them shout with joy, and they even break into song.

Psalm 65, Part 2, teaches that the same great and awesome God who stills the seas and shakes the ends of the earth is also the One who softens a drop of rain, waters a furrow, and blesses a small sprout. The power and the tenderness are one and the same. And so, when all creation sees His goodness, it cannot stay silent — it girds itself with joy, shouts aloud, and sings.
