Psalm 49 is one of the most daring, profound, and singular chapters in the entire Book of Psalms. There is no personal plea for rescue, no festive hymn of praise, and no private lament. Instead, an ancient sage addresses all of humanity — the rich and the poor, the wise and the foolish, Israel and all nations, every inhabitant of this passing world — and places before them a truth most prefer to forget: wealth and honor will not save a human soul from the final day. No brother, no father, no friend can pay the divine ransom on your behalf. The only redemption for the human soul is from God alone.
The central verse of the psalm, chosen as the title of this song, is:
"Why should I fear in days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels surrounds me?"
This is not an expression of fear — it is a declaration of spiritual strength. Even when small sins trail behind a person like shadows and days of evil press in from every side, deep-rooted faith in divine redemption grants him the power to ask with full confidence: "Why should I fear?"
This song is part of the larger journey of the project: with God's help, to compose and sing the entire Book of Psalms in a diverse, emotional, Jewish, and uplifting musical language.
