The second part of Psalm 59 continues David's prayer of rescue, but turns from the danger toward trust. He pictures his enemies as hungry street dogs that roam the city as evening falls, growling and threatening with sharp words, sure that no one hears them. Yet one great truth stands against it all: "For God is my fortress." David knows that the Lord laughs at the wicked, that their strength is nothing before Him, and that the God of mercy comes to his aid before he even calls. From this is born a song of quiet confidence rather than fear.
This part too carries the heading of the trilogy "Al-Tashchet, a Michtam of David" (57, 58, 59) — three psalms born from danger to life that turn fear into faith. If the first part was the cry "Deliver me from my enemies," the second is the rest that follows it: the enemy may surround the house, but God surrounds the person. So the melody turns a psalm of a dangerous night into a joyful, uplifting hymn.
The central verse of this part, chosen as the title of the song, is:
"Because of his strength I will wait for You, for God is my fortress."
"My fortress" means a high, safe stronghold that cannot be reached. Against the enemy's strength, David does not fight alone; he lifts his eyes to the Lord and waits in trust. The safest place is not a wall of stone, but God Himself.
This song is part of the larger journey of the project: with God's help, to compose and sing the entire Book of Psalms in a diverse, emotional, Jewish, and uplifting musical language.
