Part 1 of Psalm 63 was thirst and longing in the dry wilderness. Part 2 (verses 7-12) continues that same longing heart, but deepens it: from thirst to clinging, from loneliness to security. King David does not let go — at night, on his bed, he remembers God and meditates on Him; he feels God's upholding hand; and at the end, even facing his enemies, he knows that the king shall rejoice in God.
This part moves through three stations: night devotion (verses 7-9), the fall of those who seek harm (verses 10-11), and the triumph of joy in God (verse 12). What begins as a whisper in the dark closes as a song of security and gladness.
The central verse of the chapter, chosen as the title of the song, is:
"My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me."
David's soul clings to God like something that cannot be separated from Him. And when the soul clings like this, God's right hand upholds him and will not let him fall. This is a love that holds from both sides: a person grasps God, and God holds him. The clinging and the upholding are two sides of the same bond.
