About This Psalm

Psalm 66 is one of the great songs of praise in the Book of Psalms — not the prayer of a single soul, but a wide call to all the earth. From its very first word it invites the whole world to lift up its voice and sing to God. It is a song of open, festive, thundering joy, in which all creation shares one great praise.

Part 1 (verses 1-7) moves in two waves. First the call to praise: shout, sing, give glory, bow down — all the earth is summoned to acknowledge God's might, until even His enemies submit before His power. Then contemplation: "Come and see what God has done" in history — the splitting of the sea, the crossing of the river on foot — declaring that God rules by His might forever, His eyes on all the nations.

The central verse of the chapter, chosen as the title of the song, is:

"Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth."

"Make a joyful noise" is a great shout of gladness, a blast of festival and victory. The chapter calls all the earth — not only the people of Israel — to raise a song of joy to God. It is an invitation as wide as the world: everyone is invited to recognize the Creator's goodness and might and break into song. And when all the earth shouts together, the praise itself becomes a witness to God's reign over the whole world.
