Psalm 67 is a short song of universal blessing. It opens with the most intimate request — that God be gracious to us, bless us, and make His face shine upon us — and at once widens its gaze to all the earth and all the peoples. It begins with a personal blessing and ends with a vision in which all the ends of the earth come to know God. The blessing does not stay with the one who prays; it becomes a light that shines out to the whole world. The movement is beautiful: from the blessing to its purpose, that Your way be known on earth, then to the joy and praise of the nations, and finally to the harvest of the land and the awe of every corner of the earth — like the Priestly Blessing widened to the whole world.
The central verse of the chapter, chosen as the title of the song, is:
"May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face to shine upon us."
This is a soft, trusting request that echoes the Priestly Blessing. "Be gracious to us" — grant us grace and favor. "Bless us" — pour out good upon us. "Make His face to shine upon us" — that we feel His nearness, His face shining toward us like light upon a face. There is no demand here, only a quiet prayer for closeness, grace, and blessing.
