Pour Out Your Wrath Upon Them

This is the aching heart of Psalm 69 — the prayer of the persecuted one. He pleads that God draw near and redeem his soul; he spreads before God the scorn, shame, and disgrace he has suffered, and how it broke his heart until he fell mortally ill. He searched for someone to pity him, for comforters — and found none. For food they gave him poison, and for his thirst, vinegar. Then he cries for divine justice against his persecutors: that their table become a snare, their eyes darken, their strength give way, and burning anger overtake them — for they hound the very one God has already struck, and dwell on the pain of the wounded.

The central verse for which the song is named is verse 25:

"Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them."

This is the cry that God pour out His fury on the persecutors — not personal revenge, but that divine justice be revealed and the wicked not go unjudged.

Out of this faith this project was born — to set the whole Book of Psalms to a diverse, emotional, Jewish, uplifting melody, so every psalm finds its voice.
