Remember Thy Congregation

Psalm 74 is Asaph's great lament over the destruction of the Temple. Part 1 opens with the most painful cry — why hast Thou cast us off for ever — and describes the enemy raging in the sanctuary: roaring, axes and hammers smashing the carvings, fire cast into the House. Against all the ruin stands the prayer that carries this song: Remember Your congregation, Mount Zion where You dwelt — and come redeem it again.

The verse that carries the song's name, and its chorus:

"Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old"

Facing the destruction, Asaph does not give up — he reminds the Holy One: this people is Yours from days of old, and You cannot abandon it forever.
