The Day Is Thine, the Night Also Is Thine

Psalm 74, Asaph's lament over the Temple's destruction, reaches its summit in Part 3. After the cry of "how long" rises the greatest declaration: The day is Thine, the night also is Thine. He who set the earth's borders and made summer and winter is Master also over history's dark hours. From that knowledge rise the final pleas: remember the taunt, look to the covenant, forget not Your poor — and arise, O God.

The verse that carries the song's name:

"The day is thine, the night also is thine"

And the verse that seals its chorus:

"Forget not the voice of thine enemies"

The chorus joins the two ends of this part: all is His — and may He not forget. He to whom the night belongs can light up our night as well.
