About This Psalm

Psalm 76 is a psalm of Asaph — a quiet, awe-filled song of victory about the night the war itself was broken at the gates of Jerusalem. There is no battle scene in it — only the morning after: the arrows broken, shield and sword on the ground, the enemy's heroes sunk into their final sleep, not one hand lifted. Our sages connected it to the downfall of Sennacherib's army besieging Jerusalem: the angel went out by night, and by morning the whole camp lay still. The city did not fight — God fought for it.

Part 1 of the song (verses 1-7) tells the story of that night: God known in Judah set His dwelling in Salem — ancient Jerusalem — and there, at the place of His presence, He shattered the fiery arrows of the bow, the shield, the sword, and the battle itself.

The central verse of the psalm, chosen as the name of the song, is:

"In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel"

This is also the chorus of the song. God's greatness is not a distant idea — it is known, revealed, seen with the eyes: in Judah, in Israel, in Jerusalem. Whoever saw that morning — knows.
