Verse 1
"For the conductor — a servant of the LORD, of David, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul."
This verse is the heading of Psalm 18 — David's song of thanksgiving after his deliverance.
Verse 24
"And I was blameless before Him, and I kept myself from guilt."
"Blameless" — whole, upright. "Kept myself from guilt" — guarded from doing wrong.
Verse 25
"The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight."
"In His sight" — the LORD saw and bore witness.
The LORD saw the straight path and returned good to him.
Verse 26
"With the loyal You show Yourself loyal; with the blameless man You show Yourself blameless."
The LORD deals with each person according to their own way.
Verse 27
"With the pure You show Yourself pure; and with the crooked You make Yourself seem tortuous."
"Pure" — refined. "Crooked" — twisted, corrupt.
The LORD is a mirror — as one behaves, so God responds.
Verse 28
"For You save a humble people, but haughty eyes You bring down."
"Humble people" — the lowly. "Haughty eyes" — the proud.
God saves the humble and brings the proud low.
Verse 29
"For it is You who lights my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness."
"Lights my lamp" — You ignite the light. "Lightens my darkness" — removes every darkness.
Verse 30
"For by You I can run against a troop; and by my God I can leap over a wall."
"Run against a troop" — charge through enemy forces. "Leap over a wall" — cross the impossible.
With the LORD's strength, David can do what seems impossible.
Verse 31
"This God — His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him."
"His way is perfect" — without flaw. "The word proven" — pure like gold.
"Who take refuge in Him" — those who shelter under His protection.
Verse 32
"For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?"
"Besides" — other than, apart from. "A rock" — a firm, stable foundation.
There is no other God — only the LORD. There is no rock like our God.
Verse 33
"This God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless."
"Equipped me" — girded me with strength. The LORD gives the strength — not David alone.
Verse 34
"He made my feet like the feet of a deer, and set me secure on the heights."
"Like a deer" — swift and sure-footed. "On the heights" — high places.
The LORD places David on high, steady ground.
Verse 35
"He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze."
"A bow of bronze" — an extremely hard metal bow. The LORD trains David for battle.
Verse 36
"You have given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand supported me, and Your gentleness made me great."
"Shield of Your salvation" — the shield that is Your rescue.
"Your gentleness made me great" — Your tender care lifted me up.
Verse 37
"You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip."
"A wide place" — room to walk safely. "Did not slip" — I did not stumble.
The LORD widens the path and keeps David steady.
