Verse 1
"Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain?"
"Nations" means the peoples of the world. "Rage" means they are stirred up and angry. "Plot in vain" means they plan things that will not succeed. The verse describes people fighting against God’s rule, but their plans are empty.
Verse 2
"The kings of the earth take their stand, and rulers gather together, against the Lord and against His anointed one."
"Kings" and "rulers" are powerful leaders. "His anointed one" means the king chosen by God. The verse shows leaders joining together against God and His chosen king.
Verse 3
"Let us break their bonds, and cast away their cords from us."
"Bonds" and "cords" are ropes or restraints. Here they represent God’s rule and commandments. The rebels say: we do not want to be bound by God’s authority.
Verse 4
"He who sits in heaven laughs; the Lord mocks them."
This does not mean simple laughter. It means their rebellion is powerless before God. No human plan can threaten the One who rules from heaven.
Verse 5
"Then He will speak to them in His anger, and in His wrath He will terrify them."
"Anger" and "wrath" describe God’s judgment against evil. "Terrify them" means they will realize they are not in control.
Verse 6
"But I have set My King upon Zion, My holy mountain."
"I have set" means I have appointed and established. "My King" is the king chosen by God. "Zion" is Jerusalem, the holy place of God’s kingship.
Verse 7
"I will tell of the decree: the Lord said to me, You are My son; today I have begotten you."
"Decree" means a royal command. "You are My son" shows special closeness between God and His chosen king. "Today I have begotten you" means today I have established you in this royal role.
Verse 8
"Ask of Me, and I will give nations as your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as your possession."
"Inheritance" means what is given to him. "The ends of the earth" means even the farthest places. The king’s power comes from God.
Verse 9
"You shall break them with a rod of iron; like a potter’s vessel, You shall shatter them."
"A rod of iron" means strong authority that cannot be bent. "A potter’s vessel" is a clay pot, easily broken. The verse describes the defeat of rebellion against God.
Verse 10
"And now, kings, be wise; be instructed, judges of the earth."
"Be wise" means: understand the truth before it is too late. "Be instructed" means: accept correction and learn.
Verse 11
"Serve the Lord with awe, and rejoice with trembling."
"Awe" means deep respect and holy fear. "Rejoice with trembling" means joy that is full of reverence, not careless pride.
Verse 12
"Embrace purity, lest He become angry, and you perish from the way; for His anger may burn suddenly. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him."
"Embrace purity" means choose holiness and loyalty to God. "Perish from the way" means lose the right path. "Take refuge in Him" means trust in God and seek shelter under His protection.
Psalm 2 teaches that the noise of the world does not cancel the kingship of God. Human power rises and falls, but God’s truth remains forever.
