Verse 1
"A psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son."
"A psalm" means a sacred song. "David" is King David. "Fled" means ran away to escape danger. "Absalom" was David’s son, who rebelled against him. This opening tells us that the prayer comes from a painful family crisis and real danger.
Verse 2
"Lord, how many are my enemies; many rise up against me."
"Enemies" means people who want to harm him. "Rise up against me" means they are attacking or standing against him. David feels surrounded by many people who are against him.
Verse 3
"Many say of my soul: There is no salvation for him in God. Selah."
"My soul" means my inner life, my deepest self. "Salvation" means rescue and help from God. David’s enemies say that even God will not save him. "Selah" is a poetic or musical pause, inviting the listener to stop and reflect.
Verse 4
"But You, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head."
"Shield" means protection. "Around me" means God protects him from every side. "My glory" means my honor and strength. "Lifts my head" means God restores his courage and dignity. David says: even when people shame me, God raises me up.
Verse 5
"With my voice I call to the Lord, and He answers me from His holy mountain. Selah."
"With my voice" means David prays out loud. "Call to the Lord" means cry to God for help. "Answers me" means God hears and responds. "His holy mountain" means Zion, the holy place connected with God’s presence. Again, "Selah" marks a pause for reflection.
Verse 6
"I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord supports me."
David is in danger, yet he can sleep because he trusts God. "Supports me" means God holds him up and keeps him alive. The verse shows deep faith: even at night, when a person is helpless, God is still guarding him.
Verse 7
"I will not fear tens of thousands of people who have set themselves around me."
"I will not fear" means I will not be ruled by fear. "Tens of thousands" means a huge crowd. "Set themselves around me" means they are surrounding him. David’s danger is great, but his trust in God is greater.
Verse 8
"Arise, Lord; save me, my God, for You struck all my enemies on the jaw; You broke the teeth of the wicked."
"Arise" means rise up and act. "Save me" means rescue me. "Jaw" is the lower part of the face; here it also means humiliating and breaking the power of the enemy. "Teeth of the wicked" means the harmful strength of evil people. David asks God to stop those who want to hurt him.
Verse 9
"Salvation belongs to the Lord; Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah."
"Salvation belongs to the Lord" means real rescue comes from God alone. "Your blessing" means God’s goodness, protection, and favor. "Your people" means the people who belong to Him. The psalm ends not only with David’s private rescue, but with a blessing for all God’s people.
Psalm 3 teaches that even when a person is surrounded by fear, shame, and danger, God can become his shield, lift his head, and bring salvation.
