Verse 1
"To the conductor, with instruments, a psalm of David."
"To the conductor" means the psalm was given to the one who led the music. "With instruments" means it was meant to be sung with musical accompaniment. "A psalm of David" means a sacred song connected to King David.
Verse 2
"When I call, answer me, God of my righteousness; in distress You gave me room; have mercy on me and hear my prayer."
"When I call" means when I pray. "God of my righteousness" means God, who knows the truth and judges with justice. "In distress" means in a narrow, painful situation. "You gave me room" means You opened space for me and gave relief. David asks God to show mercy and hear him.
Verse 3
"Sons of men, how long will my honor be shamed? You love emptiness and seek falsehood. Selah."
"Sons of men" means people. "My honor" means David’s dignity and reputation. "Shamed" means treated with disgrace. "Emptiness" means things with no real value. "Falsehood" means lies. "Selah" is a poetic or musical pause, inviting the listener to stop and reflect.
Verse 4
"Know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for Himself; the Lord will hear when I call to Him."
"Know" means understand clearly. "Set apart" means chosen and treated in a special way. "The faithful" means someone loyal to God. David says that God hears the prayer of the one who belongs to Him.
Verse 5
"Tremble, and do not sin; speak in your hearts upon your beds, and be silent. Selah."
"Tremble" means feel awe and seriousness. "Do not sin" means do not let strong emotion lead to wrongdoing. "Speak in your hearts" means think deeply inside. "Upon your beds" means in the quiet of the night. "Be silent" means stop, reflect, and calm the heart before God.
Verse 6
"Offer righteous sacrifices, and trust in the Lord."
"Offer" means bring before God. "Righteous sacrifices" means offerings given with honesty, justice, and a clean heart. The verse teaches that worship must come together with trust in God.
Verse 7
"Many say, Who will show us good? Lift upon us the light of Your face, Lord."
"Many say" means many people are searching and asking. "Who will show us good?" means who will bring blessing and hope? "Lift upon us" here means shine upon us or raise over us. It does not mean "try." "The light of Your face" means God’s favor, closeness, and blessing.
Verse 8
"You Have Put Joy in My Heart, more than when their grain and new wine abound."
"Joy in my heart" means deep inner happiness. "Grain and new wine" represent material blessing, food, success, and abundance. David says that the joy God gives inside the heart is greater than wealth or plenty.
Verse 9
"In peace, together, I will lie down and sleep, for You, Lord, alone make me dwell securely."
"In peace" means without fear. "I will lie down and sleep" means David can rest. "You alone" means only God gives true security. "Dwell securely" means live safely and calmly under God’s protection.
Psalm 4 teaches that real joy does not depend only on success or abundance. The deepest joy comes from God’s closeness, from prayer, from trust, and from the peace that lets a person sleep without fear.
