Psalm 5 Explained — Let All Who Take Refuge in You Rejoice

Verse 1

"To the conductor, for the flutes, a psalm of David."

"To the conductor" means the leader of the music. "For the flutes" points to musical instruments. "A psalm of David" means a sacred song connected to King David.

Verse 2

"Give ear to my words, Lord; understand my meditation."

"Give ear" means listen closely. "My words" are David’s prayer. "Meditation" means the quiet thoughts and feelings inside the heart.

Verse 3

"Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I pray."

"My cry" means a deep plea for help. "My King and my God" means God is both ruler and personal protector. David directs his hope only to God.

Verse 4

"Lord, in the morning You hear my voice; in the morning I set my prayer before You and wait."

"In the morning" shows that prayer begins the day. "I set my prayer" means I place my request before God. "I wait" means I look to God with faith.

Verse 5

"For You are not a God who desires wickedness; evil cannot dwell with You."

"Wickedness" means evil behavior. "Dwell with You" means stay close to You. God’s presence is pure and cannot live together with evil.

Verse 6

"The arrogant cannot stand before Your eyes; You hate all workers of iniquity."

"Arrogant" means proud people without humility. "Before Your eyes" means in God’s presence. "Workers of iniquity" means people who do evil.

Verse 7

"You destroy speakers of falsehood; the Lord abhors a man of bloodshed and deceit."

"Falsehood" means lies. "Bloodshed" means violence and harm. "Deceit" means trickery. "Abhors" means strongly rejects.

Verse 8

"But I, through Your abundant kindness, will enter Your house; I will bow down toward Your holy temple in awe of You."

"Abundant kindness" means God’s great mercy. "Your house" and "holy temple" mean the place of worship. "Awe" means deep holy respect.

Verse 9

"Lord, guide me in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before me."

"Guide me" means lead me. "Righteousness" means God’s true and just path. "Enemies" are those who oppose David. "Make Your way straight" means make the right path clear.

Verse 10

"For there is no truth in his mouth; their inward part is ruin; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue."

"No truth" means dishonest speech. "Inward part" means what is inside a person. "Open grave" is a strong image of destructive speech. "Flatter" means smooth words hiding lies.

Verse 11

"Hold them guilty, God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out because of their many transgressions, for they rebelled against You."

"Hold them guilty" means judge their evil. "Counsels" are their plans. "Transgressions" are sins. "Rebelled" means they fought against God’s will.

Verse 12

"Let All Who Take Refuge in You Rejoice; forever they will sing for joy. You will shelter them; those who love Your name will rejoice in You."

"Take refuge" means run to God for protection. "Shelter them" means cover and protect them. "Love Your name" means love God Himself.

Verse 13

"For You bless the righteous, Lord; You crown him with favor like a shield."

"The righteous" means the person who walks in God’s way. "Favor" means God’s kindness and acceptance. "Like a shield" means God’s blessing surrounds and protects him.

Psalm 5 teaches that prayer begins with honesty before God. It calls us away from lies and evil, and toward trust, worship, refuge, and joy under God’s protection.
