Who May Dwell in Your Tent? Who May Abide on Your Holy Mountain?

Psalm 15 is the psalm of the doorway. David stands before the house of God and asks the most important question: Lord, who may dwell with You? Who may live on Your holy mountain? And the answer is surprising — it speaks not of sacrifices or ceremonies, but of character. It is a list of simple, everyday qualities: integrity, justice, truth in the heart, care with the tongue, faithfulness to one's word, honesty with money. The road to God's holy mountain passes, first of all, through the way we treat people.

The Sages of Israel teach that in this short psalm David gathered the principles of the whole Torah into eleven qualities. And the psalm ends with a powerful promise: "He who does these things shall never be moved." The stability of life comes neither from strength nor from wealth — it comes from character. The melody turns the double question of the opening into a refrain that returns again and again, like someone knocking gently on the door of God's house.

The central verse, chosen as the title of the song, is:

"Lord, who may dwell in Your tent? Who may abide on Your holy mountain?"

"Your tent" is the house of God, the place of His presence; "Your holy mountain" is Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The double question is the heart of the psalm: not "who may visit," but "who may dwell." And the answer is simple and within everyone's reach: whoever is honest with people is welcome in the house of God.
