Psalm 14 is a psalm of David that looks straight at a broken world. It speaks about people who push God out of their hearts, corrupt their deeds, harm others, and live as though no judgment and no truth stand above them.
The words “Oh, that” express a deep wish and prayer. David is not asking a simple question. He is yearning for the day when God’s salvation will be revealed, His people restored, and sorrow turned into joy. The refrain gives that longing a voice of hope and restoration.
This chapter is part of the larger journey of the project: with God’s help, to set the entire Book of Psalms to music in a Jewish, emotional, uplifting musical line.
