By Day the Lord Commands His Kindness

Psalm 42 continues the cry of a soul that longs for God, remembers the holy places, and still chooses hope. In this second part, the psalm moves through distance, pressure, memory, waves of pain, and the question of enemies who say: "Where is your God?"

At the center of this song stands the verse:

"By day the Lord commands His kindness, and at night His song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life."

This is a verse of faith that lives through both day and night. By day, God sends kindness. At night, when a person is alone with his thoughts, the song of God remains with him and becomes prayer.

This chapter teaches that longing for God is not weakness. It is the voice of a soul that refuses to give up. Even when the soul is bowed down, it can still say: "Hope in God, for I will yet thank Him."
