For Strangers Rose Against Me... For He Rescued Me from Every Trouble

Psalm 54 is a maskil of David, written at one of the hardest moments of his life: the Ziphites, men from David's own tribe, betrayed him to Saul and revealed his hiding place. Out of that betrayal and pursuit, a prayer of complete trust bursts forth — not in strength or weapons, but in the name of God.

The background appears in the Book of Samuel: David hides in the wilderness of Ziph, and the local people hand him over. The betrayal comes from his own — yet David does not turn to revenge or despair. He turns upward.

The psalm moves in two motions: the cry for salvation against the strangers who have risen, and the confident thanksgiving for the rescue that will surely come. The song's title joins the two ends — the threat: "For strangers rose against me," and the rescue: "For He rescued me from every trouble." Between them stands one faith: God is the helper, God is the one who sustains.

This psalm is also part of the great journey of the project: to compose, with God's help, the entire Book of Psalms in a diverse, emotional, Jewish and uplifting musical language.
