Psalm 55 is a maskil of David — a contemplative poem — a prayer from the depths of distress. This part, verses 1-9, is the opening cry: a desperate plea for God to listen, a description of the fear and dread that grip the heart, and the famous longing to flee — "Oh, that I had wings like a dove" — to soar away to the wilderness, to silence, away from the storm.
Tradition links this psalm to the days of flight and betrayal in David's life, when those closest to him became his pursuers. The betrayal of a close friend wounds more deeply than any enemy. Out of this storm rises a prayer that rests not on strength, but on being heard: "Give ear to my prayer, O God."
There is a rare honesty here. David does not present himself as a fearless hero; he describes precisely the trembling, the terror, the desire to escape. And it is this honesty that makes the prayer real.
For this part we chose a joyful modern Moroccan chafla style. The longing for the dove's wings — for freedom, for rest, for flight above the storm — is carried on a living, liberating rhythm.
This song is part of the great journey of the project: to compose, with God's help, the entire Book of Psalms in a diverse, emotional, Jewish and uplifting musical language.
