About This Psalm

Psalm 66 continues here with a deeper kind of praise. After the opening call for all the earth to sing to God, this part gives voice to a people who have passed through trial. The song remembers that God kept our soul among the living, did not let our foot slip, tested us, refined us, brought us through pressure, fire, and water — and then brought us out into abundance.

The central verse of the chapter, chosen as the title of the song, is:

"We went through fire and through water; yet You brought us out to abundance."

This is a verse of passage. Fire stands for trial, pain, and refining. Water stands for danger, crossing, and uncertainty. But the verse does not end with fire and water. It ends with abundance — a wide place, renewed breath, relief, and life after pressure. That is why this is not a song of despair, but a song of emergence: from constriction into spaciousness, from distress into gratitude, from testing into a vow of thanks.
